Decision guide

Next.js vs React Router (Remix) vs Astro

Which full-stack web framework fits your project: Next.js, React Router's framework mode (the successor of Remix), or Astro?

When to choose each

Next.js

React framework with the App Router: Server Components, Server Actions, streaming, and fine-grained caching with Cache Components.

Choose when

  • App-like products mixing static, cached and per-user content
  • You want React Server Components today
  • Deploying on Vercel or self-hosting with Node

Avoid when

  • You want minimal framework magic and web-standard request handling
  • Mostly static content where shipping React is unnecessary

React Router framework mode (Remix)

Remix merged into React Router v7: loaders and actions per route, web-standard Request/Response, progressive enhancement, deploy anywhere.

Choose when

  • Data-heavy apps with forms and nested routes
  • Teams that like explicit loaders/actions and web fundamentals
  • Upgrading existing React Router SPAs to SSR incrementally

Avoid when

  • You need React Server Components-first patterns and built-in data caching
  • Content sites that mostly ship static HTML

Astro

Content-first framework: renders to HTML with zero JavaScript by default and hydrates interactive 'islands' written in React, Vue, Svelte or others.

Choose when

  • Marketing sites, docs, blogs and e-commerce catalogues
  • Best possible Core Web Vitals with little JavaScript
  • Mixing UI frameworks or migrating between them

Avoid when

  • Highly interactive app-like products (dashboards, editors)
  • Heavy per-user server logic across the whole site

Verdict

Choose Next.js for full-stack React products that benefit from Server Components and built-in caching. Choose React Router's framework mode (where Remix now lives) if you prefer explicit loaders and actions, web-standard primitives and progressive enhancement, or you're growing an existing React Router app. Choose Astro for content-heavy sites where shipping little JavaScript matters most, adding interactive islands where needed.
